WAFA Barbados 2017

8 Nightsfrom £2095.00 pp

It’s going to be tough going, but attending the WAFA 2017 show also involves glorious gardens, palm-fringed beaches and lazy days by the pool…

Tour Overview

fiogf49gjkf0d
After the great success of the World Association of Flower Arrangers (WAFA) show in Dublin in June 2014, it was announced that the next show will be held on the sun-kissed Caribbean island of Barbados in June 2017. If the show is to be anything like the one in Ireland it will be a spectacle not to be missed for anyone interested in the art of floral arrangements.

The Show will include flower-arranging demonstrations and lectures along with magnificent displays of floral art created by professional, amateur and novice flower arrangers from all around the world. A full day visit to the Show is complemented with a series of guided excursions and visits featuring both public and private gardens and other local attractions. Included are visits to Hunte’s Garden, a lush tropical garden filled with the vibrant colours and textures of rare exotic plants; Orchid World, which houses a dazzling display of more than 20,000 orchids; Harrison’s Cave, a crystalline limestone cavern which is one of Barbados’ greatest wonders, and George Washington House, a historic plantation house where the future US President resided in 1751.

Further optional excursions are available, including a full-day tour visiting Cherry Tree Hill viewpoint, Bathsheba beach, the Andromeda Botanical Gardens and the Sunbury Plantation, a half-day Island Safari tour and a Catamaran Lunch cruise. There is also ample time simply to enjoy the tropical island paradise of Barbados with its near-perfect weather and stunning, palm-fringed beaches. There is plenty to occupy those whose interests may lie elsewhere, such as golf, sailing, cricket, scuba-diving and game fishing, so why not persuade your husband or partner to come too?

Our hotel: Tucked away amid lush tropical gardens and swaying palm trees, the 4-star Accra Beach Hotel & Spa provides unparalleled relaxation on the South Coast of Barbados. It sits directly on the white sands of Rockley Beach, consistently ranked one of the top beaches in Barbados, and there are shops, restaurants and entertainment close by. The resort’s amenities include a sprawling outdoor pool with a swim-up bar, a tranquil adults-only pool and a full-service spa, creating the ultimate atmosphere for an island getaway. Delicious international cuisine is served and there is weekly entertainment such as limbo dancing and exciting floorshows with fire-eaters and live music.

Wednesday 21 June 2017
We depart this morning on a direct flight from London Gatwick to Barbados. On arrival we will be met by our local coach and transfer to our hotel, the 4-star Accra Beach Hotel and Spa, which is located on the south coast, three miles from the capital Bridgetown. The afternoon is free to rest and relax in the hotel, before dinner is served in the evening.

Thursday 22 June 2017
After breakfast we depart for a visit to Harrison’s Cave, a crystalline limestone cavern which lies in the centre of the island. Flowing streams, deep pools of crystal clear water and towering columns characterize this living cave, which is adorned with stalactites and stalagmites of all colours and sizes.

We will also visit a private garden, an opportunity to see how a local gardener makes the most of the tropical growing conditions.

In the afternoon you have the option of joining an Island Safari excursion, which takes you to some of the hidden corners of Barbados using 4x4 vehicles.

Friday 23 June 2017

Enjoy your breakfast. We depart this morning for the WAFA 2017 show. We have all day to wander among the exhibits and meet people from all over the world with a shared interest in floral art. There will also be an opportunity to sign up for talks and demonstrations – full details to be announced in due course.

Dinner is served in the evening at our hotel.

Saturday 24 June 2017
After breakfast the day is free to relax in the hotel or explore the surrounding area at leisure. You are of course free to make another visit to WAFA 2017, at your own expense.

Alternatively join our optional island tour which includes visits to Cherry Tree Hill, a superb viewpoint; Bathsheba, a breathtakingly beautiful beach of white sand; the Andromeda Botanical Gardens, which play an important part in horticultural research and education; and the Sunbury Plantation House, which dates back to 1660 and gives a vivid insight into the colourful history of sugar plantations in the West Indies. Lunch is included.

Dinner is served in the evening.

Sunday 25 June 2017
After breakfast the day is free to relax in the hotel or explore the surrounding area at leisure.

Alternatively join our optional Shopping Day excursion, an opportunity to purchase inexpensive souvenirs as well as quality designer-name goods at duty-free prices.

Monday 26 June 2017
Following breakfast this morning we depart on a full-day excursion that will take us first to St Ann’s Fort which was built in 1705 and is currently the home of the Barbados Defence Force Headquarters, with an armoury display and an interesting collection of artefacts from the 17th & 18th centuries.

We continue to the George Washington House, also known as Bush Hill House, a historic plantation house where the young George Washington and his ailing brother Lawrence resided for two months in 1751. Barbados was the only country ever visited by the future “First Father” of his country and Bush Hill House the only house he ever lived in outside of the continental United States.

Our next visit provides a most colourful and fragrant experience as we explore Orchid World, home to more than 20,000 Orchids. A meandering path lined with orchids leads through a coral grotto to the five orchid houses. Keep your eyes on the trees for orchids such as Schomburgkia that bloom once a year with spectacular results. Species such as Vandas, Phalaenopsis, Calanthe, Cattleya, Ascocendas and Dendrobiums, to name but a few, can be found throughout, with some of the rainforest orchids appearing to hang in mid-air with their roots completely free of soil.

We conclude today at Hunte’s Garden, located in a gully in the centre of Barbados' rain forest. Thanks to such an interesting location, the garden offers a multidimensional experience, with vigorous plants densely growing on many levels, from sunny and open spaces, down to a mysterious, dark heart of real Caribbean jungle.

Dinner is served back at our hotel in the evening.

Tuesday 27 June 2017

Enjoy your breakfast. Another day free to stroll along the beach, take a swim or perhaps venture further afield.

This morning our optional excursion is a cruise aboard a Catamaran yacht, ideally suited for sailing in these shallow, sheltered waters. Relax on board a catamaran and watch the beautiful coastline of Barbados slip by, then drop anchor in a quiet bay for a swim in the crystal clear waters, followed by a sumptuous Barbados lunch.

Dinner is served in the evening.

Wednesday 28 June 2017

On arrival in London the group will disperse or make onward connections.
